As the cooler weather comes upon us, our thoughts turn to jack o’lanterns, hayrides, turkey dinners, and…interlock paving?

“Absolutely”, says Advantages Interlock President Michael Labbe, “the fall is a perfect time to address areas of your property that would benefit from structural landscaping.  Many people think of their landscaping needs only in the spring, when the weather can be rainy and their yards get muddy.  Homeowners are usually surprised by the wait that they may encounter to get their job done, as most landscapers book their first jobs of the New Year in the previous year.  The customers that actually get their driveways, entranceways, decks, etc. finished in the fall avoid all this, and have the added benefit of enjoying their outdoor living spaces for the entire summer season.”

Some may be concerned about the famous Ottawa winter, (sneaking up faster than many of us would like), and wonder about completion of their jobs.

“Not to worry!” laughs Michael.  “This is a common misconception about interlock paving.  Actually, a high-quality interlocking job can be installed right up until the point that the ground is frozen.  A few snow flurries or squally won’t interfere with the integrity of an interlock paver installation at all.  To complete jobs in late November; even early December, is not unusual.  It just depends what Mother Nature is dishing out, and when.”

Michael also explains: “Given the winter and the spring to start the settling and planting process means that your autumn-landscaped yards will have a more-matured look faster.”

Showing a real enthusiasm for his work, Michael continues.  “The reason that we all walk down the streets of neighborhoods is to admire the homes and landscaping of others – it’s one of life’s little pleasures!  And it’s so obvious to all that even the most modest home can be absolutely gorgeous if it is landscaped properly.  In fact, on e of the most dramatic differences you can make to your home’s curb appeal without breaking the bank is to have an interlock walkway, replace your “builder’s concrete” steps with an interlock step system, and have interlock cover your ‘builder’s–poured-concrete” stoop.”

Asking Michael about the advantages of hiring a professional structural landscaper to do the job, he replies, “In a DIY-installed interlock job, it is difficult to come out with professional-looking results.  This is because there is so much site preparation involved in making a job look perfect, and many trade-knowledge things that only qualified interlock installers know to do.  An interlock installation is so very much more than just the placing of pavers.”
